Witnessing Painting, like meditation, is a personal experience that can also be practiced in a community setting. In this studio, we do not comment on each others paintings--whether positively or negatively--as any form of feedback can hinder the creative process. We do, however, devote time in the last session of the month for an activity called "silent-witnessing". Silent-witnessing is a way to develop compassionate viewing. The paintings from that month are hung all around the room where they can be seen, and we spend time with each one. It is an opportunity to practice metta, or loving-kindness, toward ourselves and others. This means approaching each painting and "being with it" without judgement, but rather seeing what it has to say. Powerful work comes from such a raw and intimate connection to our creativity. The paintings often radiate an energy all of their own. During the silent-witnessing, we get to take in that energy and develop a curiosity and respect for what has emerged during the month. Just as there is no positive or negative feedback, there is also no critiquing or interpretations made of the work. The work stands on its own as a unique creation worthy of our attention. |
