The Process Painting for process is a tool for exploration, self-discovery and awakening. It is a blending of painting and meditation---an outward expression that develops an inner stillness. The focus is directed on the experience rather than on creating a final product. Free from comparison and critique, each person embarks on a boundless creative journey into the unknown. There are no mistakes in painting. Every experience is valid and worthy of our attention and curiosity. Whether we show up with fear, racing thoughts, pain, comfort, excitement, contentment, pleasure, doubt...it's all welcome. If we show up with an unwanted feeling, we simply develop a curiosity about it, and ask "What color is the feeling? What does it look like? Can I welcome this feeling to my painting experience?" In this practice we are all beginners. No art experience is necessary. We recognize that every person is a creative being with unlimited potential, and that, when we show up and tap into the creative source, our expressions emerge naturally. Technique is not taught---it is discovered. The painting happens by breathing and moving with color. While this is not art therapy in the traditional sense, the process itself is very theraputic. Participants speak of a deeper connection to themselves and a greater acceptance of their experiences. The process is healing on many levels. Being open to growth and facing one's fears leads to joy and a sense of accomplishment. Besides, playing with paint is fun! |
