The Studio: Facilitators

After recieving formal art training in illustration from the Kansas City Art Institute, Jenny Hahn wanted to find a way to "unlearn" technique and return to a more spontaneous process of creating. She began attending Sarah Oblinger's Paint or Die studio in 1999, which later became the Earthcurve Studio painting community of Danielle LaFleur Brooks and Susan Hand. Jenny was fascinated by the shift in creative energy that happens when people paint together in community---each person on their own path, but somehow connected. When Danielle and Susan moved to Vermont in 2005, Jenny carried the process forward by creating Breathing Color Studio.

Jenny is also a graphic designer at Unity, a not-for-profit organization that offers spiritual support to seekers worldwide. Her interest in Vipassana (insight meditation), yoga, and journaling influence her painting practice.

Stephanie Gray began her process painting journey in 1997 at a three-day workshop facilitated by Sarah Oblinger. Although she had never before picked up a paintbrush, she felt strangely at home and was taken back by the power of the collective creative force. It was shortly after this workshop that she made the decision to do whatever she could to bring the process to as many people as possible.

In 1998 Stephanie began assisting Sarah in her Kansas City workshops and in 2000 opened “A Center for Mindful Exploration” where Sarah’s Paint or Die Studio would reside for a year.

In her 10 years of painting, Stephanie has attended painting workshops facilitated by Stewart Cubley and Aviva Gold. She has also explored the process through writing in workshops facilitated by Danielle LaFleur Brooks and Caryn Mirriam-Goldberg. She continues to attend Sarah’s workshops and is currently a participant in her newly formed study group which helps to integrate the painting process into daily life.

Stephanie views process painting as a way to connect with Source and uses it as a tool to practice present-moment awareness. She feels it has taught her a powerful way to walk through life moment by moment, breath by breath.
